Cabrillo Park was acquired by the City of Santa Barbara between 1925 and 1927. Although the park has been a ball field since its development in the late 1920s, during World War II it was used by the United States Armed Forces for housing, training, and recreation. www.santabarbara.com
Pershing Park soon became a winter training site for Major Leaguers. New York Yankees star Babe Ruth made the first of two visits to Santa Barbara in 1924, drawing an overflow crowd of 1,500 fans to Pershing Park. He hit a home run. Ruth returned to Santa Barbara with Lou Gehrig on another tour in 1927.
